Brain Drain

Italy has been facing a brain drain for quite some time now and there are many reasons as to why. From what I’ve observed it isn’t a surprise that this “brain drain” is occurring. In the little time i've been studying here, I realized I would not want to be employed over here or work hard for a degree that is barely recognized. The unemployment rate is extremely high, jobs are scarce, and the numbers are increasing drastically. I’ve noticed the job diversification is very small. Majority people work in a family owned business or in a business that is centered around service. What I mean by services in hospitals, bus/train stations, banks, etc. Even in the hotel I work at, there are a few receptionist, 2 managers, 3 ladies that work as the housekeepers, and one financial guy. In the past while at work, numerous people have come in looking for jobs but get turned down. They are all younger just looking to get any job they can get their hands on. But even the people that are employed are not satisfied with their jobs. There are many strikes that occur with different professions such as transportation strikes. On top of that, the economy is very poor right now and is experiencing a recession and has been for years. One of the biggest factors of the brain drain is the difference in education levels. The quality of education is very poor in some parts of Italy and those with higher education levels are struggling to find jobs. Many people are moving abroad immediately after they graduate in hope to find work elsewhere and take full advantage of the degree that they just worked their butt off for. But with all these recent graduates and students leaving, there is not an even exchange because there are not many people moving to Italy due to the bad economy. In the states, the person with the higher education level is most likely to be employed and satisfied rather than emigrating to find work. In the US there is also a wider variety of jobs to choose from. But at this rate, Italy could be in trouble when it comes to their future concerning jobs and the economy. Especially with it being a country that incorporates work into their pillars. The other issue is that the government recognizes the high rates of emigration but is failing to take action and change things for the better. There have been actions taken to increase the number of educated employees and jobs that require a higher degree but as for the youth there isn't a great deal of change. And even with the little steps occurring, it will take years for there to be a good amount of improvement and for the citizens to recognize it and who knows where the country will be at that point.
