The working culture in Italy

The working culture is obviously very different in Italy and the United States. The Italian constitution states that work is a fundamental aspect of the state and it is a Republic founded on work. Their lives are revolved around work… As for America, it is not written in the constitution that work is a focus point, but we make it one. From my personal experiences and observations, I think the big difference between the working culture in both nations is the motivation behind it. Americans work to get promoted, prove their social class, to have access to the more luxurious things, and to have the ability to travel. But in Italy, they work to live. To provide for their families and themselves without the idea of being “money hungry.” I think part of the reason for this, is that the country is very family oriented and not given as many job opportunities when it comes to businesses. There isn’t a diverse job selection here in Italy. Your family either owns the business and have passed it down to you, you started one and do most the work for it, or someone from another country owns the business and you just learn how to run it. For example, at Vogue Hotel, the owner is from the United Kingdom but the two managers are brothers and the man that takes care of the financials is the brother-in-law. With all that being said, there seems to be minimal structure…This could be an issue when trying to target people from all over the world because some people may see it as unofficial. For example, Julia went into Vogue Hotel to book a room and was like Hannah they barely asked for any information regarding our stay. And even at work they fail to respond to emails for confirmation which is very unusual in America. For my workplace to fit the global market, they need advertise more, become more time efficient, and easily accessible when it comes to bookings. A lot of businesses don’t have marketing teams to promote their product or service and I think this is a necessity for having a successful business especially one that is trying to bring in people from other countries. Some businesses may not want to reach the global market, but for Vogue Hotel that is mainly who they are trying to address. On the other hand, you find more humble people who aren’t striving to have an abundant amount of money here and are more relationship based here in Italy. Which in America, many people only care about the money behind work and forget to do something that they enjoy or build good loyal relationships. As for what do I think the global market will be like in 10 to 15 years in Italy, I think they will have to make advancements to be able to target people from other countries. There will be more advertising and technology usage in companies. The working culture makes up a lot of how the country is seen/run, but ultimately, it’s just how people are raised.
